…
Helikon-Tex SuperTarp – First Look

What it is : This is a fairly inexpensive polyester tarp from the company known as Helikon-Tex.

Agenda Free Link : https://www.helikon-tex.us/supertarp.html

Size Setup : 10 x 10’

Size Packed : 12” x 6.5” x 1.5”

Materials : 100% rip-stop polyester, YKK zippers
The company says that the tarp is plastic coated….I have no idea what that means other than it has been coated with either Polyurethane, silicon, or some sort of DWR. By the way, Helikon-Tex doesn’t state the Denier of the polyester – in other words, there is no way to know just how strong of a tarp this is.

Weight : 1lb 12oz with storage bags

Colors : Black, Olive Green, PL Woodland, US Woodland

Price : Retail $65 – prices are raised on Amazon – some are around $100. I’m not sure what is happening there – it says that Helikon-Tex is the seller and it is they who are charging more on the site.

Features :
19 reinforced Attachment points – check the placement of these
Taped seams
Storage bag allows for easy packing even when wet – I want to test that out specifically as storing a wet tarp is always a struggle.

Two methods of storage included – zippered sleeve and drawstring bag

Side Note : When getting the information together to film this episode, I was at the Helikon-Tex web site and noticed that there are all sorts of spelling mistakes and oddities when it comes to the details concerning this product.

The site says that the drawstring compressed BAD enclosed with tarp allows to compact it for transport.

Impressions based on my handling of the tarp so far :

I like the zippered storage bag but I doubt storing the tarp in this is going to be easy and quick after a rain event.

I do like that the zippered pouch has attachment points so you can rig this up on the outside of your pack for quick deployment.

Might not be a Problem : The attachment points do not surround the tarp equally as you have more points on two sides than you do on the other two sides. This is nonsensical in terms of design and what this is going is making the setup process harder and more time consuming than it needs to be.

You go to setup the tarp, you get it out of the storage bag, unfold and begin setting it up; Because of the design you have to pay extremely close attention to where the tie off points are and make sure to orientate those tie off points in the proper way with the trees in the forest otherwise you could get yourself in a position where you partially set up the tarp and you realize that you don’t have the proper tire points to complete the set up.

Problem : Small Tie-out loops? Stitching?

Price : Based on what I see here, the retail price is fair but I wouldn’t pay more than that retail price for a polyester tarp. For around $100 you can get a much stronger nylon tarp that is also lighter in terms of weight from other companies, AquaQuest is an example with their Guide tarps.

This has been a first look, make sure to stay tuned to the channel as I test out this product and eventually review it.
Coleman Introduces a Premium Line of Tents – Outdoor News

Recently I was contacted by an individual named Robert and he was asking my opinion about the Coleman Peak1 series of outdoor products; I had to respond honestly in that I wasn’t aware of this series but I would look into it.

— That’s what I did and I was a bit surprised at what I found! —

Before I speak of the surprises and my thoughts on these new products, lets go over the press release that I found online;

Link to Press Release : https://www.outdoorsportswire.com/new-coleman-peak1-collection-inspires-outdoor-adventures-exploration/
…..
Tents

Focusing on the tent shelters that the company has released,

1 Person Backpacking – $230 – 4lbs 12.6oz
2 Person Backpacking – $270 – 6lbs 1oz
3 Person Backpacking – $300 – 7lbs 8.7oz
4 Person Dome – $440 – 12lbs 15.1oz
6 Person Dome – $550 – 15lbs 8.7oz
…..
Surprises

There are a few points which really surprised me while looking over the details concerning these tents and they are as follows;

low waterproof rating – only 2000mm HSHR
large storage size – the company doesn’t state the storage size information but they do have a picture of the tent attached to the outside of a backpack and it looks very large
heavy – Coleman states in their own marketing material that the backpacking tents are ultralight and that isn’t true.
lack of information concerning the materials used – they state that aluminum poles are used but don’t state the main materials – I suspect they are polyester based on the stated weight
price is higher than what I expected considering the available stats – for a polyester material at this weight that’s expensive.
Very few images of the tents on the Coleman site. One picture of the outside of the tent, no pictures of the inner tent.
…..
Coleman states that the tents have a 2,000mm HSHR which is on the low side.

Coleman also states that the tents are capable of handing 45mph winds.

Footprints are included

Tents look to have a lot of mesh which is an uncommon feature for Coleman tents in general. Breathability and airflow should be excellent with these shelters.
…..
What do you think of this new line of premium shelters from Coleman? Do the prices surprise you?

For me, the prices are a bit shocking especially when you compare to similar shelters;

The Teton Sports Mountain Ultra 2 is over $100 less expensive.
The NatureHike Mongar 2 is around $100 less expensive, is 2 pounds lighter and features double the waterproof rating.
……
Coming up in the future I will get in at least one of these tents to see how well it performs and together we will see whether or not these tents are worth the rather high price-tag.

Sizes Available : 10×7, 10×10, 13×10, 15 x 15, and the 20×13

Measurements Unfolded :
20×13’

Measurements Stored :

Materials :
70D ripstop nylon fabric

Dual Silicone & PU coating – 5,000mm hydrostatic rating

Versions : AquaQuest offers a number of different types of 20 x 13’ tarps;

The Defender, the Safari Hybrid and the Guide.
The Defender is the strongest, heaviest and the most expensive. Also it is the most waterproof with a 20,000mm hydrostatic rating.
The Guide is the lightest weight and the least expensive.
The Safari Hybrid falls in the middle.

Features:
100% Waterproof
Lifetime warranty
70D ripstop nylon fabric
Non-toxic dual Silicone & PU coating
Reinforced stitching
Heat taped seams
Stuff sack included
25 tie out points

My Use : Over the years I have used this tent in all sorts of capacities;

I’ve taken it backpacking and while heavy, it does offer a ton of protection and space for one person or an entire group of people.

I have also used it with my truck; it makes for an awesome awning of sorts – because it is so large it provides a ton of protection.

Review Pros :
Top Notch Quality
Tons of versatility; The large size allows for an exceptional amount of setups. Can be used at a campsite or with your vehicle.
Lots of protection for multiple people and their gear – blocks wind, rain and sun
With my testing, this tarp has been 100% waterproof. AquaQuest claims 5000mm hydrostatic resistance and I have no reason to doubt this based on my experiences.
Tons of loops along the parameter and also along the top and body; all of these loops translate to an endless amount of setups
Excellent stitching; reinforced areas.
Price : This in my opinion is a pro; yes it is expensive but the quality is so good that I consider the value to be excellent. I have large size cheap tarps but the quality is nowhere close to this. Some have ripped. Some leak. Not this one.
Large, good quality storage bag.
The company offers these tarps in 3 different models so you can get the right strength that you need.

Review Cons :
With a large size tarp, come natural issues such as limited locations to set up. You need space or you will have to get creative.
More difficult setups – a tarp this large can make set ups in the forest difficult.
Heavy – one could argue that it is light for the size but in the end, when you put this in your pack, you will know that it is there. It’s a heavy, large tarp.
Takes up a lot of space inside of your pack
Can be extremely difficult to dry due to the size. You might not think about this before purchasing but it should be considered; the 20×13 is a monster so ask yourself this, if you take it out for a trip and this tarp gets wet, how are you going to dry it? Where are you going to put it? Are you going to string it up to dry?

Summary :
While there is a time and a place for a smaller, lighter weight tarp, I am a big fan of large tarps and if you are looking for a large size tarp, I can easily recommend this product. It‘s pricey but the quality is absolutely excellent.

You get a lifetime warranty with this product and for any trip with the exception of a full on winter storm, this tarp is going to offer you a lot of protection.

AquaQuest is a company that has earned my respect over the years; I’ve used their products in winter storms with winds over 40mph, I’ve used them in violent thunderstorms, out in the forest, with my truck, on and on.
SmartBottle DOUBLE WALL Outdoor with 18MM Fast Pour Spout
Agenda Free Link : https://smartbottleinc.com/product/double-wall-outdoor-with-18mm-fast-pour-spout-2-6-or-5-3-gallon/

Price : $12.45 for the 2.6 Gallon with a 18mm Fast Pour Spout
Weight : 7oz for the bag itself plus an oz or two for whatever cap or spout you decide to go with.

Double Walled : These bags are composed of two layers of nylon which makes them highly resistant to punctures and cuts. According to the manufacturer web site, the double wall bottles are 14-mil.

There are single walled versions available and they are even less expensive!

Pros :
Prices are awesome on these bags. Overland specific products can be exceptionally expensive and this provides a very compelling option.

Can be used for any sort of purposes; camping, overland, boating, prepping and survival, etc.

Lots of accessory options to choose from with all sorts of caps and spouts.

All bags pass the UN drop test for emergency water, which is dropping the bag 10 times from 2 meters.
Puncture resistant made from two layers of film
Extra wide seals insure a strong, leak proof container
Compact when empty and folds easily for storage
BPA free
Smart Bottle material conforms to FDA Regulation 177.1520 which permits the use of polyethylene in articles that contact food
Integral handles at the top and bottom are designed for easy carrying and dispensing content
Remains upright when partially full
Grommets on both ends for securing and hanging
Made in the U.S.A.
Bag may be frozen with water in it

You can store these bottles for long periods of time; I’ve had this one in the truck for 2 months at a time.

Compact : Small size means that you can travel with numerous bottles and use what you need as you go. When you don’t need them, empty, roll and store.

Collapsible : You can have a ton of capacity within your vehicle without taking up any space

These bottles can be used with Saywer water filters along with other brands as well.

Durable :
Easy to transport.
Can be hung.
Flexible container
When you sit one of these down, they are very stable and you don’t have to worry about knocking them over. Stand up on their own.

Very tough : There are numerous videos of people throwing these bags around; I’m going to do that but I can tell you from my person use, they have proven themselves to be very reliable.

Easy to clean – mouth is large enough to get a brush in the bag if you need to otherwise you can rinse with soap and water.

Cons :
The bags have no identification markings other than the maker so if you have multiple sizes, you could get confused initially as to what size you are looking at.

Their web site isn’t the best nor the most detailed and lacks information in regards to sizes, dimensions, and other details which some may find important.

Sizes :
750ml cub for $10.
Wine bottle of $13.
1 Gallon for $7
2.6 gallon – 22lbs
5.3 gallon – 43lbs
They have water filtration kits and more.

When it comes to spouts, they have a 8mm spout for $3, a tubing spout for water filters, garden hose adaptors and other types of caps.

………
Summary :
For the money, these bottles….they really are more bags than bottles….are some of the best water storage solutions that I have come across and I have no problem recommending them highly.

The quality is awesome.
The versatility is excellent.
Price is extremely fair.

For for those who have limited space, they provide a lot of water hauling capacity.
